Introduction to Mosaic Art, Part 1

$150.00

To celebrate Mother's Day, this two-day workshop will introduce participants to mosaic basics so they can create a unique gift for mom or another woman in their circle. It's also a fun opportunity for moms and daughters to create together! The first of the two workshops, Sunday, May 5 is when everyone will make their mosaic. The following Sunday, May 12, guests will return to The Forge to learn how to grout their finished piece.

This introductory class to mosaics is designed to spark creativity in what may be a new-to-you art form, but mosaic art is anything but new. The first known mosaic work, made with colored stones, shells and ivory, was made in the 3rd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. Today's mosaic artists have a plethora of choices and are only limited by their imagination. Marble, slate, stained glass, beads, Italian glass (smalti), ceramics, tile, rocks and many other items are used in today's mosaics whether it's contemporary, classic, abstract, a portrait, landscape or in the traditional Greek and Roman styles.

Guests will mosaic their choice of a wooden heart to hang on the wall or a picture frame for one-of-a-kind gifts. Participants will create a design for their base (substrate) using their choice of materials (tesserae), choosing from the numerous options that will be provided. There will be step-by-step, hands-on instruction and guidance throughout the 4 hour class.

* If you have family heirloom china that's broken or chipped, a piece of costume jewelry or other item that reminds you of your mom, grandmother or other woman you hold dear, it can be incorporated into your mosaic. Please reach out to Suzanne to discuss.

Suzanne discovered the art of mosaics when she lived in the Netherlands from 2013-2019 and attended an adult education mosaic class at the American School of The Hague. During her years in Europe Suzanne attended numerous workshops led by maestros and maestras, all graduates of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Fruili in Spilimbergo, Italy. Suzanne continues to hone her skills at numerous workshops throughout the U.S., many led by artists she worked with in Europe. She has a deep passion for sharing her joy of mosaic art and offers workshops and continuing classes at her studio, Glassy Eyed Mosaics, in Bellevue!
