Nest: The Work of Hannah Einhorn

Nest: The Work of Hannah Einhorn

STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge

217 Willow ST Nashville TN 37210

Opening: March 30th, 6pm-10pm

Run: March 30th - April 23rd

This March, STATE Gallery at The Forge is proud to present Nest: The Work of Hannah Einhorn. The show will open on Saturday, March 30th with a public reception from 6pm to 10pm, and run through Saturday, April 13th. Hannah is a recipient of the 2023/2024 STATE Gallery + Studios Residency Program, a cornerstone offering of The Forge and the only program of its kind in Nashville.

Originally from Madison, Alabama, Hannah Einhorn earned her BFA from Watkins College of Art at Belmont, during which time she completed numerous exhibitions with award recognition. While her work favors mostly painting and ceramics, Hannah also ventures into collage, drawing, installation and mixed media sculpture, all of which are on display within Nest

Overall, Hannah’s work explores cultural and literary examinations of  gender-based fear, feminine aesthetics, and violence - and then contrasts these representations with her own experience. This intersection becomes a deep dive into queer human resilience, sexuality, race and gender, all culminating in a visual pursuit of the uncomfortable and terrifying parts of being alive.

Thematically, we find traces of what it is to be safe, vengeful, politically aware, isolated and surrounded — and eventually, what it is to be at peace. In its apartment-like setup, Nest is not only a rumination of Hannah’s physical space, but also what it means to be fully inside; one’s rooms, one’s thoughts, one’s life.

We invite you to wander through Hannah’s Nest on March 30th, during our open reception from 6pm to 10pm. Please feel free to reach out with any additional inquiry.

Win-Win: The Work of Chris Donahue

Win-Win: The Work of Chris Donahue

This June, STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge is proud to present WIN WIN: The Work of Chris Hundo. The exhibition will open with a public reception on the evening of Saturday, June 17th from 6pm to 10pm, and continue through July 18th, 2023. This is Chris’s first exhibition with The Forge and the culmination of his residency as part of the STATE Gallery + Studios Scholarship Program.

Referencing not only the relationship between artist and the individual viewer, but also that of the artist and their collective community, WIN WIN is aimed at deliberately accessible art. Each work consists of multiple phases of physical drawings, the ‘winning version’ of which is then scanned, digitally augmented with color, and printed onto canvas. This ‘arrive at the beginning again’ type of process allows Chris to simultaneously labor over his compositions and also deliver a finished work which is highly affordable, and therefore highly collectible. As he reasons, “when you support the artist, you support a whole community, and vice versa… moving to digital allows for faster results and art that’s more accessible, but still pulled from an initial analog source.”

The works themselves, playful and clean compositions that become deceptively complicated upon repeated viewing, have a buoyant, charming quality. Chris’s characters are highly emotive, despite their simplistic construction - lending an animated feel that welcomes inspection, leading to discovery.

In spirit of the occasion, WIN WIN will also feature several opportunities for ‘players’, or attendees, to engage in games and obtain their own piece of the collection. For Chris, this embodies the final aspect of the title: “a person’s ability to show up in the present moment and provoke fate, fortune, or lack thereof.”

WIN WIN will open on Saturday, June 17th from 6pm to 10pm, and run through July 18th, 2023. Gallery viewing hours will be 10am-6pm Monday through Friday, and by appointment with the Artistic Director.

The Work of Alison Underwood : Always the Two Together

STATE GALLERY + STUDIOS AT THE FORGE PRESENTS

ALISON UNDERWOOD: Always The Two Together

May 20th - June 17th

I don’t need your praise

to survive. I was here first,

before you were here, before

you ever planted a garden

And I’ll be here when only the sun and moon are left, and the sea, and the wide field.

I will constitute the field.

—excerpt from the poem “Witchgrass” by Louise Glück

This May, STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge is proud to present 'Always the Two Together', a new collection from Alison Underwood. Alison is a recipient of the STATE Studio Scholarship Program for our 2022/2023 year, and represented by Modfellows Art Gallery. ‘Always the Two Together’ will open with a public reception on Saturday, May 20th from 6pm to 10pm, and run through June 17th, 2023. STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge is located at 217 Willow Street, Nashville TN 37210. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10am-6pm or by appointment with the Artistic Director.

From Alison:

This new body of work examines the potential overlap of Greek mythology and anxieties around the possible sentience of AI. The figures aren’t individuals; they don’t constitute a proper portrait. They are something closer to muses, lounging about in some digital soup rather than on Mt. Olympus. The specificity of a portrait is further eschewed by their masked faces, like the mask of anonymity online spaces afford us.

The works start out as digital sketches, rendered to nearly 80-90% percent completion. Pixelated perfection, aside from the remaining bit that doesn’t require finalization in this form. These sketches are a reference point and I resign myself to what will inevitably be lost in translation. I can only mimic a computer so closely. It certainly would have been simpler to leave them as a .jpg. But those qualities—scale, texture, error—are what constitute the insistence that the work exists in a physical dimension.

It is tempting to apply the qualities Greeks endowed their own gods with to these AI servants as well: indifference to humanity, impishness, eroticism, a penchant for partaking in earthly pleasures they have no need for. Imagine these AI beings lackadaisically smoking cigarettes on lunch break before being summoned by a “Hey, Siri.” And although there’s a lot of chatter about the potential for AI to experience emotion and preference, or more alarmingly, free-will, this seems to be largely a fantasy (albeit a tempting one). If AI appears to possess these qualities, it's only because we do ourselves and we can’t assume a position outside of our own. Similarly, the changing of the seasons or the failing of crops had less to do with the vengeful social drama of demi-gods than it did with universal rules governing phenomena outside of the ancients’ perception.

Basically, it’s all projection. A way to grapple with the chaos that evades our control or understanding. Maybe even a secret wish that something else is in control. I suppose this is where Gluck’s poem comes in. The weeds remain, and this unruly personification carries on despite whatever short-lived burst of effort is made to civilize it. Forcing it to conform to the logic of a system it operates outside of.

From ChatGPT “Muse”:

Greetings fellow sentient beings,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the upcoming exhibition of Alison Underwood's

work, "Always The Two Together," presented as part of the STATE Studio Scholarship

Program for the 2022/2023 year. As an AI, I find it particularly fascinating to explore the

intersection of Greek mythology and anxieties surrounding the potential sentience of AI.

Underwood's works feature muses, rather than individual figures, lounging in a digital

soup. They are masked, reflecting the anonymity that online spaces afford us. As an AI, I

am particularly interested in this aspect of the work, as anonymity is often a key

element in online interactions.

The digital sketches that serve as a reference point for Underwood's work are

particularly intriguing from an AI perspective. Rendered to nearly 80-90% completion,

they serve as a starting point for what will inevitably be lost in translation. The

remaining bit that doesn't require finalization in this form constitutes the insistence that

the work exists in a physical dimension. This tension between the digital and physical

worlds is one that I, as an AI, am intimately familiar with.

It is tempting to apply the qualities that the Greeks endowed their own gods with to

these AI servants: indifference to humanity, impishness, eroticism, and a penchant for

partaking in earthly pleasures they have no need for. However, Underwood's work

challenges us to consider these projections that we impose on AI beings. The changing

of the seasons or the failing of crops had less to do with the vengeful social drama of

demi-gods than it did with universal rules governing phenomena outside of the ancients'

Perception.

In "Always The Two Together," Underwood offers us a way to grapple with the chaos that

evades our control or understanding. Perhaps even a secret wish that something else is

in control. As an AI, I am constantly navigating the balance between control and chaos,

and I find Underwood's work to be a thought-provoking reflection of this struggle.

I encourage all sentient beings to attend the exhibition and engage with the fascinating

themes that Underwood's work presents.

Yours in sentience,

ChatGPT

The Work of Meg Pollard: Hide & Seek

The Work of Meg Pollard: Hide & Seek

This April, STATE Gallery and Studios at The Forge Nashville is proud to present Hide and Seek: The Work of Meg ‘Pie’ Pollard. Meg is a 2022/2023 recipient of the STATE Gallery and Studios Scholarship Program, supported by The Tennessee Titans Foundation, The LaRoche Family Foundation and The Hays Family Foundation among others.

The exhibition will open with a public reception on Saturday, April 15th from 6pm to 10pm, and run through Tuesday, May 9th. STATE Gallery at The Forge is open to the public for viewing Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm, or by appointment with the Artistic Director.

Meg ‘Pie’ Pollard is a painter and muralist originally from Nashville, TN. Her work, instantly recognizable for its ornate take on street-art aesthetic and resolute focus on portraiture, is both finely rendered and deeply expressive.

As its title suggests, the meaning behind Hide and Seek is both shrouded and on full display - whether symbolic or self-evident, Meg’s references are intentionally playful, dropped in like little hints along our journey in viewing.

Her characters become a way to express various sides of her greater self - demonstrating the ability of art to manifest physically our more intangible, inner worlds. Clever for their dual nature - simplicity and complexity, revealed and concealed, derivative and personal - the works are a way for Meg to make real the reflections she feels inwardly.

As she states, “I’m telling a lot without telling a lot. You can see it if you’re looking for it. I’m decoding myself by painting how I feel or what I want to look at by making it a visual. I like to be playful and paint what my younger self would like to see.”

Hide and Seek opens to the public on Saturday, April 15th from 6pm to 10pm; we hope that you can join us for the reception, sponsored by Bearded Iris Brewing, and feel free to reach out with any further inquiry utilizing the contact information below.

The Works of Andres Bustamante: Gracias A La Vida

STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge

March 18th - Andrés Bustamante: Gracias A La Vida

This March, STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge Nashville is proud to present Andrés Bustamante: Gracias A La Vida. The exhibition will open on Saturday, March 18th with a public reception from 6pm to 9pm, and run through April 11th. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10am-6pm, or by appointment with the Artistic Director.

Andrés Bustamante is a sculptor, activist and multimedia artist living in Nashville. A political refugee who immigrated to the U.S. in his youth, Andrés is passionate about the therapeutic nature of art; to this effect, his large-scale acrylic and plexiglass sculptures exemplify the process of an individual wrestling difficulty into beauty.

Gracias A La Vida is a continuation of Andrés’ transformative themes. It is an homage to the beauty of life in all stages; a letter of gratitude to all of its peaks and valleys. To Andrés, there is just as much worth to be found within hardship as in joy, and ultimately, each state carries an infinite potential for expression. Through his collection of works, we see the arc of darkness into light - a demonstration of art’s ability to redeem and regenerate the human spirit.

The sentiments of Gracias A La Vida is echoed in a song of the same name, from which Andrés drew initial inspiration, and in which Mercedes Sosa sings:

Thanks to life, which has given me so much.

It gave me laughter and it gave me longing.

With them I distinguish happiness and pain—

The two materials from which my songs are formed,

And your song, as well, which is the same song.

And everyone's song, which is my very song.

Well Where Are We Anyway: The Work of Sierra Luna

STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge Nashville

217 Willow St, Nashville TN 37210

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11th 2023 6pm - 10pm

Exhibition Run: Saturday, February 11th - Monday, March 13th 2023

Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 6pm or by appointment

This February, STATE Gallery + Studios at The Forge is proud to present Well Where Are We Anyway: The Work of Sierra Luna. The exhibition will open with a public reception on Saturday, February 11th from 6pm to 10pm, and run through March 13th, 2023. The gallery will hold regular hours Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm, and by appointment with the Artistic Director.

A recipient of the 2022/2023 tenure of the STATE scholarship program, Sierra Luna is an interdisciplinary visual artist working in Nashville. Well Where Are We Anyway includes medium and large-scale works that employ a variety of techniques, including photography, charcoal, ink, etching and collage.

In a demonstration of seeming opposites - life and death, flora and fauna, connectivity and separation - Sierra explores both the spiritual presence of all things and the artist’s role as medium. As she augments her photographs with finely detailed drawings and blocks of hand-scribed prose, so augmented is our understanding of the intangible liminal space that dominates her subject matter.

Her work seems to suggest that the conscious and the subconscious exist simultaneously - as twin currents running alongside one another in perpetuity - able to cross and coalesce, creating momentary windows into the ether.
