In this entry-level class, students will discover their inner designer to create and assemble their own cutting board. Participants will learn and experiment with new skills, completing a high quality end-grain cutting board that is both a work of art, and a functional necessity.

This project is fun and approachable, all completed without the use of moving blades. Part 1 will begin with glueing and clamping. In Part 2, the board is completed by sanding and sealing with a food-grade finish.

End-grain cutting boards make a wonderful gift for any occasion, especially when you make it yourself! They are preferred by professional chefs around the world because they look beautiful and keep knives sharper.

Get down the fundamentals of woodworking by creating your own custom wood keepsake box with lid! This class is a project-based introduction to woodworking, where students will learn to cut, assemble, and glue a mitered box with splines on each corner.

Students will choose from a wide selection of wood species / grain and will gain experience with table saw and advanced techniques, compound meter saw, band saw, router table, and sanders to complete their own unique box measuring roughly 9" L x 6 "W x 4" H.

Class Outline:

  • Session 1: Introduction, wood selection, constructing the box body.

  • Session 2: Constructing the box lid.

  • Session 3: Completing the finish to achieve a professional-look.

Travis E. Curtis is a Nashville native who enjoys making Windsor chairs in both traditional and modern styles. His grandfather, Edward L. Curtis, worked in the finishing department of Gibson Guitar Co. and his grandmother, Charlesie Marie Curtis, was a master carver for Davis Cabinet Co. Both grandparents instilled a love for woodworking, knowledge, and pride in craftsmanship in Travis from an early age. A lifelong amateur turned professional in 2012, he designs and builds Windsor chairs and furniture in his Whites Creek, TN workshop.

Get down the fundamentals of woodworking by creating your own custom wood keepsake box with lid! This class is a project-based introduction to woodworking, where students will learn to cut, assemble, and glue a mitered box with splines on each corner.

Students will choose from a wide selection of wood species / grain and will gain experience with table saw and advanced techniques, compound meter saw, band saw, router table, and sanders to complete their own unique box measuring roughly 9" L x 6 "W x 4" H.

Class Outline:

  • Session 1: Introduction, basic construction, how to apply stain or finish. Homework is to shop for a glass insert piece and mat (optional) to bring to the next session.

Across 3 sessions, expert woodworking instructor David Amundson will guide you through the tools and equipment, design and application techniques, sanding and finishing, as well as demonstrations and sources of inspiration.

You will have time to practice in class and even bring some work home to complete between sessions.

A lifelong amateur turned professional in 2012, he designs and builds Windsor chairs and furniture in his Whites Creek, TN workshop.

Learn a centuries-old heritage craft and a staple of decorative wood design! Parquetry is the craft of creating tessellating patterns using wood veneer, and translates into many areas of decorative woodworking including furniture, flooring, coasters, ornaments and more.

Across 3 sessions, expert woodworking instructor David Amundson will guide you through the tools and equipment, design and application techniques, sanding and finishing, as well as demonstrations and sources of inspiration.

You will have time to practice in class and even bring some work home to complete between sessions.

Class Outline:

  • Session 1: Introduction, examples and inspiration, fundamental tools & techniques. Practice in class and take home to complete laying out the design.

  • Session 2: Pressing designs onto a backer board, sanding and finishing demo. Return in a few days to pick up the project post-pressing and take home to work on the finish.

  • Session 3: Cutting down projects to final size, last steps for finishing.

End-grain cutting boards make a wonderful gift for any occasion, especially when you make it yourself! They are preferred by professional chefs around the world because they look beautiful and keep knives sharper.

Learn the process of preparing rough sawn stock for use in woodworking. Gain hands-on experience using the jointer, planer and table saw, as well as how to produce a piece of S4S lumber from rough sawn stock.

We will discuss alternative ways to prep S4S lumber, as not everybody has the space needed for the machines traditionally used in this process.

In a brief session following the conclusion of the class, any students willing to stay and participate will be able to run some pieces of their own stock through the machines.

In this entry-level class, students will discover their inner designer to create and assemble their own cutting board. Participants will learn and experiment with new skills, completing a high quality end-grain cutting board that is both a work of art, and a functional necessity.

This project is fun and approachable, all completed without the use of moving blades. Part 1 will begin with glueing and clamping. In Part 2, the board is completed by sanding and sealing with a food-grade finish.

End-grain cutting boards make a wonderful gift for any occasion, especially when you make it yourself! They are preferred by professional chefs around the world because they look beautiful and keep knives sharper.

All needed materials for this class will be supplied to students by The Forge.

Begin your intensive introduction into the art of wood turning with Jared Moran of Wildland Woodworks! We will cover the basics of the lathe, lathe tools and accessories. We will start with a discussion of various holding techniques, how to prepare bowl blanks and a discussion on design. Students will continue mastering skills by turning bowls on the lathe, which they will take home after sanding and sealing them. The maximum number of students is three, so that each student receives one on one instruction, each on a lathe of their own.
