Introduction to Mosaic Art, Part 1

Introduction to Mosaic Art, Part 1
$150.00

To celebrate Mother's Day, this two-day workshop will introduce participants to mosaic basics so they can create a unique gift for mom or another woman in their circle. It's also a fun opportunity for moms and daughters to create together! The first of the two workshops, Sunday, May 5 is when everyone will make their mosaic. The following Sunday, May 12, guests will return to The Forge to learn how to grout their finished piece.

This introductory class to mosaics is designed to spark creativity in what may be a new-to-you art form, but mosaic art is anything but new. The first known mosaic work, made with colored stones, shells and ivory, was made in the 3rd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. Today's mosaic artists have a plethora of choices and are only limited by their imagination. Marble, slate, stained glass, beads, Italian glass (smalti), ceramics, tile, rocks and many other items are used in today's mosaics whether it's contemporary, classic, abstract, a portrait, landscape or in the traditional Greek and Roman styles.

Guests will mosaic their choice of a wooden heart to hang on the wall or a picture frame for one-of-a-kind gifts. Participants will create a design for their base (substrate) using their choice of materials (tesserae), choosing from the numerous options that will be provided. There will be step-by-step, hands-on instruction and guidance throughout the 4 hour class.

* If you have family heirloom china that's broken or chipped, a piece of costume jewelry or other item that reminds you of your mom, grandmother or other woman you hold dear, it can be incorporated into your mosaic. Please reach out to Suzanne to discuss.

Suzanne discovered the art of mosaics when she lived in the Netherlands from 2013-2019 and attended an adult education mosaic class at the American School of The Hague. During her years in Europe Suzanne attended numerous workshops led by maestros and maestras, all graduates of the Scuola Mosaicisti del Fruili in Spilimbergo, Italy. Suzanne continues to hone her skills at numerous workshops throughout the U.S., many led by artists she worked with in Europe. She has a deep passion for sharing her joy of mosaic art and offers workshops and continuing classes at her studio, Glassy Eyed Mosaics, in Bellevue!

An Inclusive Art History

An Inclusive Art History
$75.00

The traditional western art history canon omits numerous artists whose contributions to the art world are staggering. Moving from the renaissance to contemporary art, we will look at female, queer and nonbinary, and artists of color through a survey of the non-traditional canon.

We will also discuss the reasons access was restricted for artists of these groups, and the major movements that they became a part of. We will move right into the contemporary sphere, discussing current artists as well.

Instructor: Jennifer Gagliardi

Bio: Jennifer is an academic focusing on film/media studies along with the way art is displayed and interacted with in the museum space. She worked in film studies for her BA and then moved into Art History and Criticism, graduating with her MA form Stony Brook University in 2017. Jennifer also completed a Cultural Studies Certificate with the university, which helped further inform her work. For her MA thesis, Jennifer considered interactive spectatorship in media studies, emphasizing the intersection of video art and photography. She currently teaches courses at Pratt Institute and St. Joseph's College, while also working as assistant gallerist at Julia Martin Gallery. Throughout her teaching and guide experience, Jennifer works to emphasize practices of looking, leading viewers through an interactive experience.

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame
Dec

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame

Build Your Own Canvas Stretcher Frame
$110.00

Beginner Level

This class will explore a couple different approaches to building an absolute staple for painters: the canvas stretcher frame. Even though they cost a small fortune to buy in an art supply store, they are actually fairly easy and inexpensive to build. The main variable in their construction is what kind of tools / work space is available for the artist to use?

This class will present approaches for how to build stretcher frames for folks who have little work space and few tools all the way up through folks who have generous work spaces and a decent array of woodworking tools available to them. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, there will be a technique/process shown that will fit your profile.

As a part of this class, students will produce (and take home with them) at least one canvas stretcher frame. Students will also leave with an understanding of both the equipment and materials required for producing stretcher frames on their own in the future.

** Classes are transferable up to 48 hours before class, but not refundable.
